A Sommelier’s Prayer

This post is dedicated to all those taking their Certified Sommelier exam this Wednesday, March 26.  It’s rare that the Court hosts two exams on the same day, but aspiring candidates are traveling to both Campbell, CA and my hometown of Chicago to reach for the next step on their climb towards wine mastery.  I hope they will find comfort in these words:

Heavenly Father,

We come to this room today not merely to be tested but because we wish to honor You.

We thank You for Your Land, Your Elements, Your Seedling.

Without these, the liquid written about in Your Word could never be created.

And we thank You for the thousands of men and women, past and present, who have worked Your Land, and with the gifts You have given them, turned your ingredients into wine.

Please allow Your Spirit to work through us today.  Help us remember all the tiny miracles You have created on the journey from Terroir to wine.

Please steady our nerves, calm our fears and remind us that no matter the result today, You love us eternally, and You will one day welcome us to Your Vineyard.

In Christ’s name, we pray.  Amen.
